STAGE 1 – PRE TESTING

Maintenance Testing

(Minimum of 2 prior to Black Belt Testing)

Maintenance testing, conducted on a regular testing day, is the first step towards qualifying for Black Belt Testing. Candidates are able to get testing experience and build their confidence for the upcoming exam. Your Head Instructor will notify you once they decide you are ready to maintenance test.

1st Maintenance test will include:

•Tae Keuk 5-8 forms chosen by Grandmaster Kwon

•3 station board breaking. The 3 station break must include:1 hand technique, 1 spinning kick, 1 flying kick

  (Ex: Knifehand Strike, Spinning Kick, and Flying Sidekick)

•1st White stripe given after the student completes their testing

2nd Maintenance test will include:

•Tae Keuk 1-8 forms chosen randomly by Grandmaster Kwon

•3 station board breaking. The 3 station break must include: 1 hand technique, 1 jump kick, 1 flying kick

  (Ex: Knifehand Strike, Jump spinning Kick and Flying Sidekick)

•2nd White stripe given after the student completes their

  testing

Maintenance tests are invaluable preparation for Black Belt testing. They provide an opportunity for candidates to receive direct feedback from Grandmaster Kwon regarding their progress and any areas that will require extra practice in preparation for Black Belt testing. Maintenance tests may be taken during any regular belt test.

One Step Sparring Blue Belt to Black Stripe Belt

Self Defense Blue Belt through Black Stripe Belt

  Forms: Tae Kuk 5-8,

3 Station Board-Breaking: 2 Kicking Techniques and

  1 Hand Technique (chosen by Master)

2nd WHITE TIP: 2nd MAINTENANCE TEST

Knowledge and proper execution of:

One Step Sparring White Belt to Black Stripe Belt

Self Defense White Belt to Black Stripe Belt

 Forms: Basic (White Belt) Form and Tae Kuk 1-8

3 Station Board-Breaking: 2 Kicking Techniques and

  1 Hand Technique (chosen by Master)

1st YELLOW TIP: QUALIFYING CLASS

Knowledge and proper execution of all color belt forms, one step sparring, self defense and approval by Master Instructor to take candidate test.

2nd YELLOW TIP: CANDIDATE CLASS

Given after the students completes their candidate class. (Students will be asked to demonstrate three forms selected at random, and a three station board break comprised of two kicking techniques and one hand technique.)

*Students must complete both maintenance tests BEFORE the qualifying class.

STAGE 2 – EXAM PREPARATION

QUALIFYING CLASS (First 3 Hr Class):

You must have the recommendation of your school Master to attend the Qualifying Class. Generally held on a Saturday, this class is conducted by Grandmaster Kwon. It begins with a seminar on the importance and meaning of being a Black Belt. It also includes a review of the entire World Class Black Belt Curriculum. Candidates will work with Grandmaster Kwon and will focus strongly on basic stances and basic kicks. Students will also review forms, one step sparring, and self-defense. This is a great time for students to ask any questions they may have concerning curriculum. Students are encouraged to bring small snacks (ie. water, sports drinks, fruit, granola bars, etc….). There will be short breaks given so students can regain their energy. After Grandmaster Kwon reviews the students progress and ability, and determines who is ready to go to the 3 Hour candidates class. Attendance at this class is required to be eligible to test for Black Belt.  

PARENTS ARE ASKED TO STAY FOR THE FIRST HOUR OF THIS CLASS.

Students who are then given permission to proceed with the testing process will receive information on further requirements. If you have any questions, Please ask one of the Master or Instructors as soon as possible.

CANDIDATES CLASS (Second 3 Hr Class):

Also conducted by Grandmaster Kwon, this class covers the Black Belt testing format, as well as a continued review of curriculum requirements. This class is for students that are candidates for the upcoming Black Belt test. At this class students will be assigned their partner for testing and also work on all aspect of the testing procedure. Students will need to plan to spend extra practice time between the Candidates Class and their Black Belt test to work with their partner. Attendance at this class is required to be eligible to test for Black Belt. 

 

2nd Yellow Stripe

Upon the successful completion of this Candidates class, you will receive your 2nd Yellow Stripe.  Congratulations, you are now ready to test for your Black Belt!  

 

Testing for 1st Degree Black Belt

The Black belt testing process consists of three stages each of which are offered three times a year according to the schedule listed below:

Black Belt Candidate Application

APPLICATION FOR PROMOTION TO BLACK BELT

This form is required by the World Tae Kwon Do Federation in order to receive international certification as a Black Belt. The World Tae Kwon Do Federation has its headquarters in Seoul Korea, and is a Group A member of the International Olympic Committee. The W.T.F. is responsible for overseeing the development of Olympic style Tae Kwon Do throughout the world. All Master Kwon’s Black Belts will receive a World Tae Kwon Do Federation Black Belt certificate, meaning that their Black Belt status will be recognized in any W.T.F school in the world.  This application is completed for you by your individual school.

ONE PASSPORT SIZED PHOTO

These photos must be handed in to be attached to your application and will be used on your Black Belt identification card produced by the W.T.F.

ESSAY

Students must write an essay on “Tae Kwon Do and My Life”, stating how Tae Kwon Do has had an impact on their lives, for younger candidates parents are encouraged to assist them in writing the essay. The essay should be one page or more.

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION (from a Senior Belt) 

Your senior belts have served as training partners and role models throughout your training. Now they anxiously await welcoming you to the Black Belt level, and facing together the challenges of the advanced curriculum. Request one of your Senior Belts to write a recommendation letter in support of your promotion.

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION (from a Junior Belt) 

As a senior belt in the school, you are looked up to by many of your junior belts and classmates. This is an opportunity for you to involve them in your training. Ask a junior belt to write a letter to Grandmaster Kwon in support of why you should be promoted to Black Belt and why they feel that way.

Black Belt Testing includes:  

Black Collared Uniform

After taking the test for black belt, students are eligible to wear a black collar uniform, the first of which will be provided as a gift from Grandmaster Kwon

International Certification & Black Belt Identification card from Kukkiwon

Kukkiwon is the World Tae Kwon Do Federation Headquarters, located in Seoul Korea and is the governing body of Tae Kwon Do worldwide, due to time constraints you may not receive the certification on your testing date. It will be presented to you as soon as we receive it, typically 2-3 months after application is submitted.

Embroidered Black Belt

Your name will appear in English on one side and the phrase, “Presented by Master Kwon” in Korean, will appear on the other side. If you have a preference for how your name is written, please notify your school manager.
